Skateboard Deck Choices

There is more to consider when buying a skateboard deck than just picking the shape and size. There are many types of decks on the market
with differing features, so you just need to compare them and pick the one that fits your skateboarding style. Below are a few of the common decks you can buy:

7 ply maple decks

These are the standard skateboard decks that most companies make. These are the most common decks you will find. This is the ëstandard boardí that the skateboard decks below will be compared against.

Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz deck has a layer of Kevlar which makes the skateboard much stronger while not adding much weight. The problem with this board is that it doesnít have as much give. Therefore it tends to break easier than some other deck types.

Blind & Darkstar

These companies make 9 ply boards which are stronger and thicker and heavier than the standard board. The Blind decks also have rounded edges.

Zero, Girl & Toy Company

If you like flat boards, then you will want to check these out. Flat means they will last longer also. Their flat decks are standard 7 ply.

Lib Tech

Lib Tech makes nice decks that have layers of fiberglass on the top and bottom of maple plys. They are strong decks and light too. The problem with these is that they delaminate fairly fast.

Habitat "Skylite"

This deck is made differs from standard 7 ply in that it is 5 ply maple which makes it a whole lot lighter. The trade off is that it is also a lot weaker.

Element "Fiberlite"

The Fiberlite is somewhat unusual in that it is made with a long fiberglass strip along the length of the deck. This results in a much lighter deck than you have with the standard deck, but the problem is that a little ëgiveí develops over time along the fiberglass strip.

The type of deck you choose in the end will depend a lot on your skateboarding style and which type of deck you feel most comfortable on.
