Looking to buy some skateboard bearings? Well there’s a few things you should know in order to keep from wasting your money. There are a few common misconceptions out there about skateboard bearing and what you don’t know can cost you money.

Skateboard Bearings Tip #1: ABEC rating is not important.

The ABEC scale doesn’t really pertain to skateboard bearings. The scale was devised to be a standard for machine parts. So a high ABEC indicates a bearing that has had high quality machining; and this is quite important to know when dealing with high speed machines.

Under those conditions, a bearing that has a low ABEC will simply disintegrate from the friction. But skateboards do not even come close to those speeds so the ABEC rating is just not a factor in skateboard bearings. You can get unrated bearings that perform just as well and are less costly.

Skateboard Bearings Tip #2: Don’t Spin Your Wheels

Spinning your bearings might be an interesting way to kill a little time, but it doesn’t do much as far as indicating how fast your bearings will roll down the street with you on board.

Bearings were designed to perform with the weight of a person on deck while making contact with pavement. In fact, bearings usually have thick sticky grease lubricating them so a flick n spin test won’t prove a whole lot. They were not designed to spin fast under those conditions.

Skateboard Bearings Tip #2: Get Recommendations

Ask around and find out what other skaters recommend and the results they have had with said bearings. Be sure to tune out those loyal to particular brands due to aggressive advertising and cool image.

By talking with others you will soon find out how long particular brands of bearings hold up under wear and tear and this might help you form a buying decision.
